The Essential Journey to Bethlehem

Meet God in His Word During Advent

Follow the Bible's Story of Jesus' Birth

Spend just a few minutes each day following the Bible’s story of Jesus’ birth.

The Essential Journey to Bethlehem provides you with one short scripture reading each day followed by a reflection question or two designed to help you see how God promised the world a Savior and then kept that promise.

This daily devotional will be running during Advent from November 30 to December 25.

5 His Kingship Foretold

Zechariah 9: 9-13

9 Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion!
       Shout, Daughter of Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
       righteous and having salvation,
gentle and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

10 I will take away the chariots from Ephraim
       and the war-horses from Jerusalem,
and the battle bow will be broken.
He will proclaim peace to the nations.
His rule will extend from sea to sea
and from the River to the ends of the earth.

11 As for you, because of the blood of my covenant with you,
I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit.

 12 Return to your fortress, O prisoners of hope;
even now I announce that I will restore twice as much to you.

13 I will bend Judah as I bend my bow
       and fill it with Ephraim.
I will rouse your sons, O Zion,
       against your sons, O Greece,
and make you like a warrior's sword.

Lord Jesus, I bow before you in worship today. You are my God and King!

What might surprise someone about the description of this King?

Is there anything about Jesus that surprises you? If so, what and why?
Lord Jesus, continue to help me get to know You better each day. Keep surprising me with Your love and power.

Offer your thoughts, praises, or other Bible verses.
